Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

This is a great food court destination. The portion was huge and came with chips and salsa (which is a really nice touch for a food court spot). I had a chicken taco and a beef enchilada. The meat in both was well seasoned and filled the tortilla. The rice (I didn't get beans) was also good. If you've eaten a lot of Mexican food, you know that the rice can be hit or miss. I was pleased that this rice was a hit. The service was really fast. I had my food within five minutes of ordering. I've only been to the normal restaurant once, so I can't compare them, but this is stand out among food court options.

It's good. It's not as good as the original, full service site, but it is great for a food court. They have some tasty breakfast here as well. My biggest complaint is the service, they are a little short with you.
(4)Tyler B.
Got the tacos de ramon on recommendation from the cashier and also ordered a whole order of nachos (large enough to be shared with 2 people). I've been to the original red iguana and was super impressed with this restaurant. Both menu items we got were delicious! No complaints here.
(5)Mike W.
If you love Mexican than you will love The Red Iguana. Even though they do not have the full menu you can't beat it. The mole is out of this world! I gave them 5 enchiladas...
(5)WhiteRose S.
This place was absolutely delicious! My Mom & I really enjoyed eating dinner here while at the City Creek Center! The menu was simple, easy to read, and the food was really reasonably priced. The portions are huge! Our meals came out quickly, and we were able to enjoy them comfortably in the food court seating area. Skip the long waits at the free standing restaurants and go here!

While the food court version of the popular restaurant doesn't come close to its older siblings, this is a great alternative to the other offerings (Sbarro, assembly-line Asian). The daily special today was a creamy chicken enchilada verde with rice and beans, and chips and salsa for $5.95 - a total steal compared to the other offerings around (and they don't con you into getting a "free beverage" with your combo that costs them $0.05 but you $2.) The enchilada sauce - a creamy tomatillo - was nothing spectacular compared to Red Iguana's to-die-for mole dishes, but it was flavorful, filling and had a generous helping of chicken. The rice and beans were the shining star (always my gauge for good Mexican) - perfect flavors, cooked well and with salty cotija cheese on the beans. Loved that there were no sub-par elements typical in cheap Mexican (like crunchy rice or bland beans). I could've eaten just rice and beans and been content. The chips were tasteless but at least crunchy - however, the salsa was also killer. Tons of flavor and heat. Loved it. Would definitely recommend if you're at city creek and need a quick bite. Service is fast and efficient and it's an elevated option for food court fare.

Among the options in the City Creek Center food court, the only two that really make sense for foodies are Bocata (see my Bocata review) and Taste of Red Iguana (ToRI). This restaurant gives a good representation of what Red Iguana is all about, fresh Mexican food. What makes the Red Iguana stand out is their salsas, and ToRI doesn't disappoint. Try their Friday special, the chicken chili verde, it's really fantastic. The green chili sauce is the perfect blend of sweet, piquant heat. Another stand out are the enchiladas suisas, a very rich dish indeed, but worth the splurge. I also recommend the killer nachos, especially as a dish to share with a partner, Don't listen to the nonsensical naysayers who don't like this place. They would be happier with Chick-fil-a and Cheesecake Factory. Let them be, while you smile and enjoy the best of what ToRI has to offer.
(4)Brad S.
Warning, only one type of Mole here. Don't expect the Red Iguana, expect a Taste of Red Iguana. It's still really good food, especially for a food court atmosphere but don't judge the main Red Iguana off of the samplings you get here. Red Iguana has so much more to offer so don't write them off if you didn't like the taste here. We love both so we'll continue to eat at both. Yum.
(4)James H.
I liked the shredded chicken in the chicken tacos I ordered...I also liked the rice and refried beans served with the meal. I did not like their chips and salsa much and/or the lack of tomatoes with the dish. I have no idea if no tomatoes with tacos is traditional...but I like me some tomatoes.
(3)Alexander D.
I ordered the chicken Chile verdre special they have on friday, which came with rice and beans and chips. The food was was pretty good considering that this place is in the food court at the mall, amd for just under $6 i think thats a pretty good deal.obviously it's not at the level of the real red iguana but if you need a Mexican fix and you're at the city creek mall I would check this place out.
(3)Phil N.
I only went here because the wait for the normal Red Iguana restaurant was out of control--it was about 2 hours long. (I guess that's the only decent restaurant in SLC.) So, I decided to give their "Taste of..." restaurant a shot. The food sucked. I tried quite a bit and I felt bad throwing it away. It was no better than run of the mill mall food. I definitely would have been happier with Chick-fil-a (which is also in the same food court) than this place.
(2)Jim H.
This is the only place in the food court that matters. Generous portions, good value, incredible flavor. Everything here is outstanding. I make it a point to stop in if I'm even a little close. I get the 3 item combo. The chicken drips with juice, the pork is the amazingly tender, and the mole...
(5)Tanya L.
This is my default choice when my coworkers want to go to the mall food court for lunch. It's easily the best option there unless you're specifically craving something else. The menu is limited but they have a great selection of daily specials and meal combos. I love that their combos come in a variety of sizes from $10 for 3 items down to $5 for 1 item, all with rice, beans, chips, salsa and a drink. Go on Tuesday because their daily special is the enchilada amarilla and it's AMAZING. Pulled pork with a spicy, creamy mole that melts in your mouth. They also have the best salsa around. The service is quick and everything come out piping hot. They also serve breakfast during the week. I haven't had it yet but I really want to try it. It all sounds so amazing. I've never had anything at any of the Red Iguana restaurants that I didn't like.
(4)Kelli T.
I practically cried tears of joy when I learned Red Iguana was expanding to City Creek, right by where I work. Have no fear, the food here is exactly like the food you've come to expect from the Red Iguana restaurants. Only it comes at a discounted price and smaller portions, which sometimes is even better than what you're used to! If you ever visit, just go with the daily special. It's a cheap way to get to know their menu and venture out of your comfort zone. You'll be glad you did!
(4)Oscar A.
Pretty good flavors for fast food. My second favorite in the food court after Bocata. Just don't go thinking it'll be like the real Red Iguana. The green chile enchilada and chile relleno burrito are a favorite. Pretty filling too. If you're craving Mexican go for it!
(4)Shauna S.
Enchiladas suizas and pork tamales! Fast, yummy food just like the bigger sit-down restaurants.
(4)Darin B.
Lets get one thing clear out of the gate, this is not "The Red Iguana" or even "The Red Iguana 2". They are sit down restaurants with full kitchens, this is not, it is a food court stand and that is how it should be viewed. It is easily the best food court stand in the entire City Creek for court, probably one of the best food court stands in North America, I mean this place is up there with Burnaby B.C.s Metro Town Mall's "Pirogi King". The food is really good and hits the spot for a quick lunch. The tacos are good. The enchilada s are good. Every thing is good. If you are at City Creek or in the area its a good place to grab a bite. Now if you have hears about the legendary Red Iguana, then you need to go to "The Red Iguana" or "The Red Iguana 2" to experience the pure ecstasy of their renowned mole sauces.
(4)Jacob F.
The Wednesday lunch special is spectacular. I believe I went 6 months eating ever week. Freaking nacho are top notch.
(5)Ryan F.
If you like Mexican food and are at city creek this is a great choice. Better than most other food court options. Chips and Salsa are great. Horchata is great. Beans and rice great. My verse mole enchilada was just good but the entire meal was still satisfying.
(4)Seth M.
Enchilada, beans and rice! Not something I think could be done poorly. I was pleased with my meal, beans weren't greasy, the enchilada sauce has some kick. I was peak holiday shopping time, and the whole crew was moving quick and efficiently! Way to go!
(4)Robert C.
The food here is always good. They are pretty quick at this location. They have a great chile relleno burrito. The chile verde is very good as well.
(4)Jessica P.
I'm from Texas and also Latina so I was very pleasantly surprised when I came across this little restaurant in City Creek. I had the shredded beef tacos, which came in what looked like a homemade tortilla. I asked for a cup of water and she said it was 25¢, so I just got a bottled water instead. I thought it was pretty ridiculous to charge 25¢ for a tiny cup of water. I don't like feeling nickle and dimed so this was a huge con for me. I hadn't realize they had horchata so when I saw that, I also got a cup. It was amazing horchata. Definitely has to be homemade or something. My meal was very tasty and I'll definitely be back bc of the quality of the food but can't speak too highly of management for charging 25¢ for a cup of water.
(3)Nathan M.
Really great Mexican food for a cheap price. The beef was better than the chicken but both were great. The Salsa was this spicy lime type. Which tasted great but was too spicy for me, but that's not saying much. Also got the horchata which was amazing, and you get a free refill on it.
(4)H Y.
I love red iguana, but this location not so much. The food was OK. I had the fish taco, which consists of a few bland fish pieces. I've had better elsewhere. The worst part of this dinning experience was that they charge you 35 cents for a cup of water when other places give you water for free !!!
(3)Missy S.
Amazing food every time! Great service and consistency with entrees. I love the daily specials. Today I had the chili verde, tortillas, rice, beans, chips and salsa for $4.99. Its a great deal and the food is spectacular.
(5)Wes N.
One of my favorite spots to eat. I like it even better than the regular Red Iguana restaurants. There's virtually no wait, and you get more food for less money. We love the veggie chimichanga (no cheese, no sour cream to make it vegan). This delicious gift of delectable food is stuffed with veggies, peppers, potato and other tastiness. The sauce is good and the salsa is FANTASTIC. The included rice & beans (vegan) hit the spot. We like to bring our toddlers to eat here, which is easy to do with little ones in a food court setting, and then after dinner, take them to the indoor dinosaur play area next door. My only complaint is that the entire City Creek is not open on Sundays!
(5)Armando G.
Very good. If you like the restaurant then you will not be disappointed with this. City Creek made a a smart decision to allow them to set up shop there.
(5)Irene L.
I was recently in Salt Lake City for a conference. One night I was watching Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives when I came up with the great idea to look up what places Guy Fieri had visited in Salt Lake City. My quick search came up with the Red Iguana. Unfortunately, the Red Iguana was located a bit too far from my hotel for me to trek to. However, I stumbled upon the Taste of Red Iguana. Taste of Red Iguana is located in the food court of the City Creek Center. I ordered the shredded beef chimichanga and the tres leches cake. Food was okay. Service was good. From a quick tour of the food court, Taste of Red Iguana seemed to be on of the better fast food options.
(3)Dre S.
I went here for the first time today. I was impressed with the service! The people were so helpful and the food was delicious! I had the pork tamale and it was the bomb!!!!
(5)J J.
Had the machaca burrito for breakfast. Although the ingredients were fresh, none if it was seasoned. Just tasted like boiled meat on a tortilla. The salsa was also bland. Not worth the price
(2)Abby S.
Potatoes and mangoes in my burrito = 2 stars.
(2)Wanda T.
I am a tourist from CA. I guess this is what "Mexican" food tastes like in Utah. The sayings about the disappointment of Mexican food outside of Cali are true!!! The meat sauce for my burrito was extremely salty and the Colorado beef in the burrito was awful. The chicken flauta was edible. The extra salsa is an extra charge. Cafe Rio(Utah native) and Chipotle isn't authentic either, but golly at least it tastes great in contrast. :[
(2)Haley C.
I'm from California and this was hands down the best Mexican food I've eaten in Utah. Don't love their mole, but I'm not a huge mole fan. Don't get too excited about the enchiladas crema, they're my least favorite thing on the menu. I seriously could eat their rice and beans all day (and be very sick but very happy). I've actually never been to the real Red Iguana or Red Iguana 2, so I can't compare, but I work downtown so I frequent the City Creek food court for Taste of Red Iguana almost once a week.
(5)Sean W.
Again, the carne asada is really good. I like to get the lunch time special tostada meal but for a dollar extra get the carne asada. Not only is it a tasty meal but it's also a good deal! I'm a poet and I didn't even know it.
(5)Kish M.
Let me start by saying that when I tried the Red Iguana restaurant I had one of those, "the emperor has no clothes" moments because everybody that has tried it (or at least all of the Yelpers who have posted reviews) have raved about it and I thought that it was just OK so imagine my surprise when I discovered that the fast food version of the restaurant was pretty good. The tacos, rice, and beans are as good as you can get at any local fast food joint which is not as high a praise as it may sound, Salt Lake City is lacking in quality mexican food. The biggest downfall is the service, it is slower than watching paint dry, I stood by the counter as my prepared food set ready as two female staff members stood there discussing world events or something, just as I was about to climb over the counter and get the food myself one of the remembered that they were getting paid to work and gave me my food ............................ oh well, small price to pay for good fast food mexican grub. I still do understand everybody's love of the Red Iguana restaurant but anytime I am downtown, I will stop in at the Taste of Red Iguana and grab some lunch, I'll just make sure I have a long time because based on how slow the staff moves it may take a while. Until next time Yelpers ................... Live Local, Be Local, and whenever you can, Buy Local!!!!!
(3)Char G.
So good! Mango mole is good BUT and extra $3?!?! When the board said $1 :( Chips and salsa are great! I would eat here again for sure.
(4)Davin K.
Pozole is amazing.. good horchata, great cheap mole, I like this quick stop for some local eats.
(4)Dre K.
The best Mexican fast food in Salt Lake. Burritos? Amazing. My favorite is the chile relleno burrito with chile verde. Red Iguana's daily specials are always solid, whether it's pozole, or enchiladas with yellow mole. They have good horchata (with a free refill) and they give you chips and salsa with the daily specials and with most items on the menu. Even their rice and beans are very tasty! The only mediocre thing I've tried there is the guacamole, but you can't have it all - and don't get me wrong, it was still very decent. Now, there's a certain type of Salt Laker who always has to add something like, "It's obviously not nearly as good as the REAL Mexican/Thai/Chinese/(enter any ethnicity here) food they have in SF/LA/NYC/(enter any big city here), but it will do for Utah." Having lived in California most of my life (and most of that in Los Angeles), I have eaten all kinds of Mexican food, from taco trucks to fancy restaurants. I also spent a week in Mexico City where I ate that "REAL" Mexican Food. And you know what? I honestly think that for a fast food restaurant, Taste of Red Iguana is absolutely delicious.
(5)PatrickJ T.
I saw Red Iguana featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. I was hoping to visit them while we were in Salt Lake City. Unfortunately, I was outvoted by the group. Only my wife and I wanted to go there. Fortunately, though, we went to City Creek Center. Everyone found some place to buy lunch at the food court here. I got the chance to have a Taste of Red Iguana. Of course, I ordered the Tacos Don Ramon. I ordered the combo which came with rice and beans plus chips and salsa. I paid $8.19. The tacos tasted okay. Nothing outstanding, but they were above average. The rice and beans were average. I do not know if it tastes the same at the original Red Iguana. I'm thinking that it will be much better at the original restaurant. Hopefully, the real Red Iguana is much better than the Taste of Red Iguana. One of these days, I hope to try the real thing cause the Taste did not meet my expectations. On the positive side though, this place was better than anything else that we tried at the food court at City Creek Center.
(3)Kate M.
Better than some of the food court options, but not by much. The flautas were huge, but the chicken was so dry and flavorless. The rice was dry and rather bland. For $10, I would have preferred a smaller portion that was seasoned properly.
(2)Randal S.
As good as the original Red Iguana? No. But that is mostly due to the food court atmosphere, not because the food isn't good. Listen. I got an enchilada with their famous mole, rice, beans, chips and salsa for $4.64. Their daily specials are a great deal and in my opinion they are the way to go. There is no way you get that Red Iguana quality for any cheaper. I was more than pleased with what I got for what I paid.
(4)Cara B.
I have been searching for good Mexican food upon relocating from California. We stopped here for a late night meal after an event and had heard good things about red iguana so we decided to give it a try. I was only moderately satisfied. I ordered a burrito asada which is my staple. Loved that it was filled with rice and beans instead of just meat and salsa. The beans were good but the rice tasted like a Mexican version of ride rice (it even had what appeared to be carrots on it). The meat was good but tasted a little off flavor wise. My biggest upset was the way it was wrapped.... Open at both ends so I couldn't pick it up, I don't want to eat my burrito with a fork. It was also a little small in opinion. Salsa was okay, kinda bland the chips were great however. Overall disappointed especially after all the hype.
(3)Jonathan C.
Great Mexican food. You can taste the freshness in the food. There menu doesn't come out of a can like so many other restaurants. If you haven't been here make it your next stop.
(5)Ed Q.
Best mall food court food I've ever had. It is just a convenient taste of the Red Iguana. Not an equal experience by any means.
(4)Denise T.
I would say that this place has solid 3 star burritos, but when you are starving they taste like 5 star burritos. I like this place because it's open early and sometimes I get hungry for lunch around 10 AM. They have pretty good breakfast burritos, I really like the Machacas breakfast burrito. The lunch items are not bad either. They also have aguas frescas/mexican drinks like jarritos, pina (pineapple), jamaica (hibiscus flower), and horchata (cinnamon rice water). I love horchata and this place makes a decent one. But what's up with all the colored iguanas in SLC? Blue, Red, Green, and Yellow? I guess if I ever need a name to open up a Mexican restaurant in SLC, I'll know what to name it.
(3)Doug C.
I recently started working in the building, and just so happen to come here for lunch before the craziness of city creek mall overcrowded the place like roided meatheads at gold's gym. I had the carne asada burrito because it's usually a winner most places. It was decent, although very small. For the price, I'd rather go to Beto's. And the tortilla was very average. The chips and salsa were good, had a nice kick but other than that I'd come here every once in a while.
(3)Jessica V.
We tried to make reservations at the original Red Iguana, but they said they couldn't take any more. "Just come on down and the wait will be 10-30 minutes." Got there and after being told the wait was an hour we looked at where to sit. Outside was the only place available...and it's winter! So we came here hoping to experience the Red Iguana taste we'd heard so much about. I wasn't thrilled with my veggie burrito. I've had much better. Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing?
(2)Sam V.
After having come here again for lunch, and checking in, I soon discovered that I became a "duchess" here, and then realized, maybe it deserves a little better than just two stars. After having tried the carne asada burrito the other day, I can honestly say that they deserve a solid 3 stars. Not to mention, I still can't get over how good the salsa and chips are. While sitting in my office pouring over files all day, it really is the most satisfying snack... although, would not recommend eating it near any important documents if you have spilling tendencies like myself... anyways, back to the food. It's standard and one of the better options in the City Creek Food Court.
(3)Alison H.
I should learn my lesson but apparently I haven't yet. I just love Mexican food and the original Red Iguana is so good that I seem to convince myself that this should be similar...but that it is not. The chips and salsa will never fail you - and that is the only thing I should order. My food today smelled funky (and not good funky) and tasted off. Dry meat, poorly seasoned rice, and slow service. I mean - they must put a lot of care in each scoop schloppage for it to take that long to call my number. The customers around me were all complaining when I walked up. Hopefully they learned something too. I hope I actually learned my lesson this time. McDonald's is better - and that's a sad day (even if you do enjoy MickeyD's).
(1)Zach F.
I had the Enchiladas Suizas and the taste was just a little off vs. the real Red Iguana. Still very good for mall food, but I would order something different next time. I understand having a limited menu vs the restaurant, but the items they did include didn't really seem to showcase what I think makes The Red Iguana stand out (mole mole mole!!). Prices seemed to be in the $6-9 range for an entrée, but portion sizes are MUCH smaller than the restaurant. I don't think this is a franchise as I saw Lucy Cardenas working behind the counter. I think it's more of an expansion vs a franchise. Bottom line, I'd go again if in the area, but if it takes much effort to get there, you're better off with the real Red Iguana or Red Iguana 2
(3)Alicia M.
I've been to the original Red Iguana, and the Taste of Red Iguana was almost as good, in half the time. I don't like meat, and when they accidentally put beef on my nachos they were very quick to fix the mistake, even with a huge line behind me. The menu is pretty condensed, but they have all the main dishes you'd want. I would definitely recommend it when you don't have the time to wait for the OG Iguana.
(3)Matt M.
A good way to experience the original Red Iguana, in half the time, and at half the cost. They run a handful of daily specials for $4.25, and that always hits the spot. Food comes out fast, and you can't beat it for the price.
(4)Samantha H.
It's an ok choice for lunch. I've had the enchiladas a few times and while they are not great, they aren't bad. The enchilada sauce is overwhelming and I do not like it. The salsa is pretty good, though.
(3)Josh E.
This is the first restaurant I have ever been to where you can't get water for free. You have to buy their bottled water or pay 99 cents for a cup that they'll kindly fill with water for you. I should have just cancelled my whole order because the burrito was terrible. Never again.
(1)Susan H.
Not impressed. I'm from the Midwest and routinely have average Mexican food. This was just okay with the exception of the mole sauce, which was very good.
(1)Shane W.
Great salsa! Great enchiladas. Great horchata!
(4)Tom F.
great food. authentic mexi too
